To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Art Car Series, BMW is launching a global tour across five continents with various events. The BMW Art Car World Tour begins in Europe and Asia, featuring works by artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Jeff Koons. In March, these iconic pieces were displayed at the Museum of Applied Arts and SPARK Art Fair in Vienna. The newest and 20th Art Car, Julie Mehretu’s BMW M Hybrid V8, will tour Asia and appear at Art Basel in Hong Kong.
The BMW Museum, home to the Art Car collection, will mark the milestone by combining it with the BMW 3 Series' 50th anniversary. Starting in June, the museum will feature a historical showcase of BMW 3 Series models, including M3 Art Cars by Sandro Chia and others.
BMW is also launching celebratory art and lifestyle products, including a 1:18-scale miniature of Mehretu’s Art Car, available in BMW Lifestyle Shops, with a 1:43 version coming later. A new edition of the "BMW Art Cars" catalogue, designed by Julie Mehretu, will feature interviews and essays on all 20 Art Cars, highlighting their artistic significance.
American pop artist Andy Warhol created the fourth BMW Art car in 1979. “I love that car. It has turned out better than the artwork," he said.
