New BMW Panoramic iDrive Debuts at CES 2025
January 14 2025 - Gary Mollohan

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 in Las Vegas (Jan. 6 - 9), the BMW Group showcased the future of driving and the user experience. Attendees got their first look at a nearly production-ready version of the new BMW iDrive, featuring the innovative BMW Panoramic Vision. This experience is powered by the new BMW Operating System X, which serves as the intelligent backbone of the updated display and control interface. This comprehensive system, characterized by its contemporary design, will debut in all new BMW models starting at the end of 2025.

The new BMW iDrive merges four central elements into a unique display and operating concept:

  • The BMW Panoramic Vision is an innovative Head-Up Display concept designed to project content across a black printed surface in the lower part of the windscreen, spanning from one A-pillar to the other. This allows all passengers to see the displayed information. Crucial driving data is specifically projected into the driver's direct line of sight, positioned on the left side of the BMW Panoramic Vision, right above the steering wheel.
  • The new optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display, positioned above the BMW Panoramic Vision, now presents integrated navigation and automated driving information directly within the driver’s line of sight.
  • The central display, featuring matrix backlight technology, offers a familiar and updated menu structure with QuickSelect for seamless touch operation of functions and content. Its ergonomically ideal placement close to the steering wheel makes it easy and convenient to use. Users can simply swipe on the central display to transfer selected content (widgets) to the BMW Panoramic Vision. Up to six widgets can be arranged as desired within the BMW Panoramic Vision.
  • The new multifunction steering wheel incorporates BMW's shy-tech concept, illuminating the relevant buttons to showcase the available functions. Serving as the main physical control, the steering wheel features buttons that offer active haptic feedback for enhanced interaction.

The integration of these four elements redefines BMW's traditional “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” philosophy, setting a new standard for driver engagement. This approach delivers a distinctive experience that is intuitive, user-friendly, and ergonomically optimized.
